Fat Yu's Hong Kong Dim Sum Spectacular! Part Two!

On second day in Hong Kong, Fat Yu again awake early and go to eat dim sum!  Can never have too much!  Other place too expensive, too many rich Hong Kong people!  Now he go to local place!  Is much cheaper and open very early!  3 am!

Place is very small, but very crowded!  Very auspicious!  Fat Yu share table with many Hong Kong people!  One China!  But again, everybody except Fat Yu speak Cantonese, so cannot talk to each other!  No matter, the ladies walk around with trays so Fat Yu can see and point to what he want!

Fat Yu again order many dishes!

Roast pork buns!  Is pretty good!  Filling salty and sweet, bread soft and delicious!

Beef balls!  (Is best part of the beef!)  Very good texture - springy and chewy!  But Fat Yu miss the crunch of water chestnut!

Shiu Mai!  Is most popular dish at the restaurant!  They make many of them, so is always fresh!  Has very good taste, even have crab roe on the top!  Very delicious!

Chicken and rice steamed in leaf!  Now this is what I talk about!  They use proper sticky rice!  Very good taste!

Shrimp dumpling!  Again, very good taste!  But, eh, not as good as Luk Yu!

5 dishes for only 100 RMB!  Is very good price!  And this time nobody laugh at Fat Yu!  Fat Yu recommend for dim sum in Hong Kong!

Fat Yu's Hong Kong Dim Sum Spectacular! Part One!

Is ancient Chinese saying, there are 3 Everlasting Truths:

1 - You are born
2 - You will die
3 - Fat Yu love dim sum!

And every one know that best dim sum in the world is in Hong Kong!  No matter that dim sum originally from Guangzhou - now Hong Kong dim sum better than original!

But AIYA!  Where to go?!  So many place to choose from, and Hong Kong very different than real China!  Hong Kong people look down on Fat Yu because he is from real China and no speak Cantonese!  (What did these 死鬼佬 do to our Chinese unity?!)

Lucky that Fat Yu have Hong Kong friend who recommend many dim sum place!  Fat Yu only in Hong Kong two days, so he try two places!

First place is famous Luk Yu Teahouse in Central!  Is on Stanley Street!  (What kind of names are these?!  What did these 死鬼佬 do to our street names?!)  Nevermind, is famous for dim sum and is very old and beautiful inside!

Fat Yu go very early - 8 in the morning!  Is many rich Hong Kong men inside eating the breakfast!  Hong Kong old lady with steam trays hanging from the necks walk around with different dishes!  Fat Yu no speak Cantonese, so they open steam tray so he can see inside!  Fat Yu order many dishes!

Roast pork bun!  Very delicious!  Bread is light and fluffy, inside sweet, just like Shanghai person like!

Shrimp dumpling!  Has pure taste of shrimp, and skin very delicate, not too thick like in Guangzhou!

Pork spare rib!  (Even come with tiny mantou!)  Eh, this one just OK!  But Fuk Yu Luk Yu no use black bean in the spare rib!  Fat Yu likes black bean taste in the spare rib!

Pork and mushroom wrapped in tofu skin!  This one also just OK!  Mushroom taste is delicious, but pork too tough!  And not wrapped tight enough!  Spill all over Fat Yu - Hong Kong people laugh at me!

Final, rice steamed in leaf!  Eh, this one not so good!  They use regular rice instead of sticky rice!  Just taste like fried rice!  Fat Yu like fried rice, but love sticky rice in leaf!  (What did these 死鬼佬 do to our rice?!)

Fat Yu is happy to go to famous dim sum place, but is expensive!  300 RMB!  Too much money - Fat Yu not rich like the rich men having the breakfast!  I am not Rich Yu...

Nonradioactive Sushi!

Fat Yu never forget what Japanese did to Shanghai people!  But, eh, sushi taste good!  Japanese people say that sushi in China not as good as sushi in Japan!

But at least fish in China not radioactive!  Instead, is beautiful!  And will not turn Fat Yu into Fat Godzilla!

Muslim Fridays!

Many people from over China come to live in Shanghai!  Not just Shanghai people!  And every Friday, the Muslim people from Xinjiang come to Changde Lu to sell food!

Fat Yu had good Muslim people food in Xian!  So he excited to try in Shanghai!  (But have to put wallet in front pocket!  If Xinjiang people steal Fat Yu's wallet, no money to buy food!)

Fat Yu want baked lamb bread!  Is Xinjiang specialty and cannot find in Shanghai!  First they stuff the breads, then stick them to the sides of the oven!  Like shaobing!

But of course must get lamb skewer too!

Overall, Fat Yu very enjoy Muslim Friday in Shanghai!  And he did not get robbed!  That is best part!

Hong Kong French Toast!

Fat Yu very confused!  He ask his France friend about his favorite laowai breakfast, French toast!  But French friend say French toast from America!  Like French fry!  Why everything French actually from America?!  That's like say Nanjing soup dumping from Lanzhou!

No matter!  Fat Yu love French toast, even if not from France!  Even more confusing - best French toast made in Hong Kong!  In Hong Kong they dip in egg and deep fry, then add butter!

But is not all!  Best part is they add peanut jam in between the toasts!  So when Fat Yu cut into the toasts, there is peanut jam inside!  Taste is very delicious!

Suanmeitang!

It is getting summer time!  Eh, but Fat Yu still drink hot tea in summer!  Chinese people always drink hot tea, no matter summer!

But also have other drink!  One other drink is suanmeitang!  Is made from sour plums and sugar and other things, and is drink cool!  Perfect for summer!

Some old Chinese people make their own suanmeitang from plums and licorice and flowers - but is too complicated for Fat Yu!  Fat Yu too lazy!  So he buy suanmeitang powder!

Just mix with water!  Is easy!  And can make cool drink in few seconds!

Xiaolongbao!

How can Fat Yu write about Shanghai food for so long and not have write about xiaolongbao?!  Xiaolongbao maybe most famous Shanghai dish in the world!  Many of the people call them dumpling, but real Shanghai people know they are not dumpling, they are baozi!  But is very close to jiaozi, so Fat Yu forgive laowai who make mistake!

Many, many places in Shanghai sell xiaolongbao!  This place probably most famous, but very expensive!  (And also from Taiwan!  Aiya!)  So even though xiaolongbao very good, Fat Yu only go when laowai pay for him!  This place also very good, and much cheaper!  But always long wait!  And today, Fat Yu too hungry to wait!  So he go to local place!  Can walk from Fat Yu's house and don't have to wait!

Place very clean!  And not too expensive - 8 RMB for 6 baozi!  Fat Yu order two order!  That is 12 xiaolongbao!

These xiaolongbao have very good flavor, but skin too thick!  (Fat Yu has very shame, skins from Taiwan restaurant are the best!  But they also charge 10 times local place!  Too much money!)

Fat Yu eat all the baozi, but on the walk home I still feel hungry!  So I stop by small baozi shop run by local woman!  She make all the xiaolongbao herself!  Even press all the baozi skin by hand!

And xiaolongbao at this shop even cheaper than other one!  8 xiaolongbao for only 5 RMB!  8 xiaolongbao - very auspicious number!  (Eh, but Fat Yu admit xiaolongbao here are smaller than other ones.  And place is not hygiene.)

12 xiaolongbao at first place, 8 xiaolongbao at smaller place - is 20 xiaolongbao!  How can one man eat 20 xiaolongbao?!

How?!  How else...
